Just Some Quick News

Quite a few people have been asking for follow-up courses - intermediate skills training, rescue sessions, all of that fun stuff! Keep checking the website for courses! I'm preparing for my presentations at the upcoming West Coast Sea Kayak Symposium - How to Demo a Kayak, Learning to Figure Tides and Currents, Women and Sea Kayaking, Slide show - various countries and at home (See the Futaleufu River of Chile, Lake Titicaca of Bolivia, the Bay of Island of New Zealand, a bit of Hong Kong, some whale watching, Barkely Sound - let's see, what else can I squeeze in there!). Full schedule here: http://www.wcsks.org/Class.htm. I'm excited that I have been re-elected to the Washington Kayak Club board of directors after a two year absence! One project I am interested in is bringing together folks on the peninsula for things like carpooling. And then there are access issues! I'll be going to the First Annual Whitewater Symposium sponsored by Zoar Outdoor October 1st! I hope to find all the latest in stroke technique and learn some new teaching tips.

Instructor's Corner

Attend and assist an IDW to receive credit for an ACA instructor update.

All ACA instructors are mandated to have an update at least every four years and this is one great way to do it! By presenting to your peers you cement existing knowledge and try out new techniques! You are now the authority!

What is the idea behind an update? It's a chance to see yourself on video once again to view your modeling. It's a time to become acquainted with new ACA programs, to share ideas, explore new techniques and meet new instructors. Each course has a different emphasis depending on the group.

For the ACA this is a way to maintain excellent standard of care - it's found that organizations that don't require refreshing of skills see skills degrade over time.

Tooting One's Own Horn -

Instructor Development: Andreešs style is quite good, supportive, fun. Enjoyed teachable moments, applicable stories and her interaction style.

Great class! I loved the experiential learning and self discovery. Got great exposure to teaching styles and knowledge of ACA instructors. The instructors complemented each other and had really good teamwork.
